Nullsoft’s Install System Gets Updated

If I say "Nullsoft", probably most people would link it with Winamp, but there's one more notorious thing about the company bearing this name. Well, maybe even two - the SHOUTcast MP3 streaming media server, and the software I want to talk about, their installer system known shortly as NSIS, which got updated yesterday...

Despite the fact that Justin Frankel's company is now a division of AOL Music, the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System doesn't come with any addware, but has a module that allows you to add banners to the installers you create with it. Anyway, let's leave this problem aside, because we're not discussing AOL's products here - all that I have to tell you is that NSIS reached version 2.32, and...

...according to the official release notes, NSIS 2.32 "is powered by PNG for Vista icon support and Subversion for development joy", so transparent Vista PNG images can now be added to your installers without "the need for any special tricks".

While the support for mismatching installer/uninstaller icons and the Subversion source code hosting instead of CVS are the only major changes in this version, the minor changes include a couple of interface fixes, a slightly improved documentation and other two minor fixes.

To download this program, simply go to the download page (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Download) and grab it while it's hot. Of course that, if you want to know more about it, all you have to do is visit the NSIS homepage (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page), and your hunger for information should end there...

How to Disable Hibernation in Vista

The Hibernation feature can be really useful for some people, but others won't ever use it, so best thing to do for them is to disable it. Why disable it? Well, when Hibernation is enabled, a file that has exactly the size of your computer's memory is created on your hard drive, and you can't remove it, even if you're not using the feature at all. When you disable it, this file automatically goes away.

In Windows XP, to disable Hibernation is very easy, but it doesn't work the same in Vista. In fact, you need to do this from the command line, because there is no option in the Vista interface that allows you to do this...

- Press the Windows key+R to bring up the Run window, and type "cmd". Be sure to run this with admin privileges!
Run cmd

- If you still have UAC enabled, press Continue if asked for any confirmation in the previous step. (to find out how to disable UAC, check this article)

- Type "powercfg -h off" and press Enter to disable Hibernation.
This is it

- One thing less to worry about in Vista!
No more Hibernation

That's all, folks! If you didn't figure it out, here's another tip - to enable Hibernation again, you have to type "powercfg -h on" in the command window!

How to Get Thin Window Borders in Vista

While Vista's interface looks pretty good, it also has some problems that came together with the new Aero theme. For example, the default window border thickness makes most windows look pretty bad, at least for my eyes, but from what I've been able to find from others, I am not the only one...

Before reading on, please take a look at the screenshot below - if everything seems perfect tot you, then you can skip this article, but if it doesn't, let's see how can we get thin window borders in Vista, shall we?
The default window border

- Right click on your desktop and choose Personalize from the menu that appears.
First Step

- In the window that opens, left click on Window Color and Appeareance.
Second Step

- If you have enabled Aero, as I did, you have to click on the link Open classic appeareance properties for more color options.
You should be here

- In the Appeareance Settings window, choose Advanced.
Appeareance Settings window

- Now, select Border Padding in the Item dropdown menu, and set a smaller size to see which one suits you better.
Almost done

- Press OK, click Apply in the Appeareance Settings window and check the result. In the screenshot below, you can see the impact of the settings above.
My result

This is it, I hope you'll find this useful and get one step closer to the perfect Vista for you and your computer!

Fedora 8 Hits the Road

For some people, the only meaning of the word "fedora" is "a soft felt hat, creased lengthwise down the crown, and pinched on both front's sides", but for most of us, Fedora is a general purpose Linux distribution, sponsored by Red Hat and developed by the community-supported Fedora Project.

Remaining faithful to its mission statement, "Fedora is about the rapid progress of Free and Open Source software.", the Fedora Project just announced the official release of a new version, Fedora 8.

<-234x60 Half Banner - left->This new version of the worthy follower to Red Hat Linux (may that one rest in peace), codenamed Werewolf, comes with a new visual style and, as everyone expected, a nice package of new features.
The Werewolf DVD

For example, the PulseAudio sound deamon enables Fedora's users to set different sound levels for each application, as well as to move streams between devices, even redirecting them to computers on the local network!

Security has also improved, with the addition of the PolicyKit authentication system, but the most obvious new feature is the new visual style, called Nodoka(see the screenshot below). Another stunning visual treat that comes with Fedora 8 is the optional color-changing wallpaper that changes its color depending on the time of the day.
The Nodoka theme

Even now, with Fedora 8 just released, we can look ahead, since the next release is announced for May 2008, the plan being to stick to a six-month release cycle. Obviously, there's no need to wait for Fedora 9, as long as this boiling-hot new version released today can be easily downloaded from the official download page, and if you don't want to take any chances, there are also Live CD/DVD discs available!

How to Disable the Delete Confirmation Dialog in Vista

No matter what operating system you're using, confirmations are, in most cases, annoying, or become so as time passes. In Vista, once you have disabled UAC, there are still a lot of things to turn off, and one of them is the delete confirmation dialog...
The dialog to disable

If you really know what you're doing, the confirmation dialog is not something you need, and disabling it is very easy, but you should be a bit more careful in the future, especially if you're removing files directly, without using the Recycle Bin.- Right click the Recycle Bin on your desktop, and choose Properties.
First step

- In the Recycle Bin Properties window that appears, uncheck Display delete confirmation dialog.
Almost done

- Press OK and remeber to be extra-careful from now on!This is it, it may sound very easy, but I am sure some of you will find this useful, so there you have it! Before I go away, I remind you one last time - if you're going to disable this confirmation dialog, be sure to think twice from now on before pressing that Del key or using the Delete command from the context menu!
