Software Reviews

Are you the proud user of a S60 smartphone model from Nokia? If your answer is yes then let me ask you is your inner "control freak" happy with the task applications installed on your phone? I'm guessing the answer is no. Well don't feel like it's impossible to have a decent planner on your S60 phone because there is at least one excellent application: Papyrus (initially called Calendar). Also if this application is still not enough you should try the Handy Taskman.

Let's face it! The S60 smartphones need a small upgrade of the task planner with a better calendar. The users who migrate from Palm to Symbian Nokia smartphones usually complain about the calendar feature from the S60. The task planner application can't keep up with all the different categories. Therefore you should download and install the Calendar application. The software became popular under a different name, Papyrus. It's available for download at www.sbsh.net for 14.50 euro.

The Calendar application uses categories (unlike the PIM soft of the S60) allowing a better structure and planning thanks to the insert of colors and symbols. Also the application enables a notebook display of events. Therefore it allows the display of days, weeks, months or tasks. The application has a filter feature which temporary eliminates private or professional meetings. Birthdays can be directly imported from the contact information and the numerous options allow important adjustments, depending on the different style regarding the display, text color and font dimensions.

If you are using for some time now the S60 platform then you already know the Taskmanager pre-installed application. While pressing (make it a long time push) the Menu key button, a vertical list should appear. This list contains all the applications that run in that moment on your phone (and nothing more). Handy Taskman is a lot more complex allowing you to be in total control. You can download it from www.allaboutymbian.com for $19.95. Besides displaying the proper list with all the applications used in that moment of time, the software will also display the free random access memory, internal memory and external memory (expandable memory).

With just a right click you can get the favorites lists (individually configurable), which can include shortcut for SMS or to your favorite contacts. If you start editing in Taskman a list with all the programs and suitable features pops out. What is Handy Taskman? Handy Taskman is genius way for you to be in control. To reach faster for what you are looking for in the S60 difficult menu.

Before Android OS and iPhone OS 3.0 mobile manufactures used in their smartphones Symbian OS. The Symbian platform is an open source operating system. All Nokia smartphones are shipped with S60 operating system. If you are an S60 Nokia user then there is no reason why you shouldn't install on your phone a few extremely useful applications. Two interesting, yet useful, applications are PSILOC Connect and the Nokia Podcast. Both have a common element (if think you already guessed), the internet connection.

The iPhone (any of the three models launched by now) automatically picks the internet connection offered in the processing moment. The S60 smartphones need PSILOC Connect for this feature. Even if initially Nokia offered this kind of application on the E Series it wad soon removed from all new phones. Not even today nobody understood the reason for this change. How does it work? The application compares all the WLAN networks and GPRS / UMTS access point of the network provider. From here the application will choose the fastest and cheapest connection. The 60 series smartphones are not equipped with this feature therefore if you use frequently the browser or other internet connection depended applications from your mobile phone you should buy PSILOC Connect (the asking price is however 9.50 euro).

The software application creates more access points with the same name. Doing so you can integrate into the phone's browser all this access points (the phone will search through every single one of the access points because of this trick) as default connection. Therefore your smartphone will be permanently, or occasionally, connected to the internet. PSILOC Connect automatically chooses a previously saved WLAN access point (if there is at least one available). Otherwise the application connects your phone to the internet using GPRS / UMTS. PSILOC Connect is a great way for you to have internet access from your smartphone with low costs.

Tired of all your old music? Choose viewing or listening to podcasts. The Nokia S60 smartphones will help you. All the Nokia smartphones have from production a podcasting client. If you can't find one in your phone then download a free one from Europe.nokia.com/A41107006. The program already has a podcast catalogue. This way you can introduce podcasts or subscribe to feeds. The offer of interesting yet good podcasts is growing continuously. You can also find interviews, reviews or comedy shows which could represent a viable alternative to listening to music. The application can edit and download podcasts without the help of any computer.

Thanks to the self upgrading function the software looks up new episodes you subscribe for during the night. Therefore you can download them in the morning if you choose so. For watching podcasts the application uses S60 player, Real Player.

This application has great features and it definitely worth's the price ($ 2.99). Interesting enough is that you can try the "Lite" version before you make up your mind. Unfortunately the "Lite" application of Blog Press doesn't work at all. Blog Press, however, delivers exactly what promised. It has a very intuitive user interface and publishes quickly even in the 2G network (EDGE). If you are looking for a blogging application for your iPod Touch or iPhone then you should choose the Blog Press.
