Having an anti – virus installed is a mandatory requirement for any computer connected to internet. If you do not want to format your PC every single week, or if you have important data on your hardware, do your best to get yourself a proper protection against viruses, worms, dialers, Trojans, keyloggers, spywares or rootkit infections. Indeed, powerful anti – viruses cost a lot, but it doesn’t mean there is nothing left for those who can’t afford them. In fact there are quite a few very good such software on the internet.

Avast
This is a name of which you must at least have heard. Its popularity comes from the high level of protection that it can provide. It is no squeamish at all regarding the resources and has various shields for P2P networks, web, IM or e – mail, behavioral blocker and even a boot – time scanning option.

Avira AntiVir
In its personal edition, Avira AntiVir is considered one of the best specialized products available. Most of the people who used it claim it has a quite impressive detection rate especially regarding the malwares. However, if we were to make comparisons, this anti – virus has no e – mail and web scanning options, making your computer vulnerable from this point of view. For these two features, you must pay, and I do not think you are willing, since you’ve got into reading this. Anyway, a positive aspect would be that despite the lack of mail shield, it could still protect you even when a virus threatens to come on this side.
Panda Cloud
If you are not one of those who spend days in front of a PC, and you’re not well familiarized with setting any kind of software, Panda Cloud is the right choice for you. It is simple and plain, does all the work without bugging you and it has automated features plus an impressive detection level. In comparison with many of its competitors, Panda anti virus has an integrated behavioral blocker – that Avira, for example, misses.
Microsoft Security Essentials
It would be useless to recommend Security Essentials for the high detection rate, since is something that already made it extremely popular. The rootkits are among the intruders with the lowest chances to attack your system when you are using it. Not only it can easily detect all sorts of invaders, but it also removes them in no time. It has some pre – sets that will do all the hard work so you do not even have to interact with it so much. Yet another thing to delight many users – it doesn’t require registration and it doesn’t exasperates you with advertisements.
Why a free version?
Because free it is not the main characteristic of such software, but utility is. It might not offer you the same performance that paid anti – viruses do, but it is still a trustworthy option. It makes regular updates and, if you choose a good product, the services provided will be more than satisfactory. In addition, if your free anti virus doesn’t do too well on removing menaces, it will at least prevent you when something is about to infiltrate.

Why not a free version?
Because it is not the best you can get. If you have the money, get yourself a paid version. Producers are constantly working to improve the databases and the fight measures for anti viruses that are on sale. In this way, you can be confident that someone is really taking care of your computer and things change from one day to another. Moreover, they come with considerable fewer false alarms.
