The Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse who is also the father of the telegraph, the instrument that used the Morse code. It was intensively used in the early days of communication, starting with 1840 when it was invented. Before the radio communication was invented this was the only way to communicate in the distance and, besides, it is a very easy code.
Nowadays is it very rarely used, only by the people who job request it, for example aviators, people in the navy and the marines or some other people who do it just for fun. All the categories mentioned before have to know the Morse code because they might face dangerous situations where they may have no other means of communication and this method is really versatile, being able to use different objects around you to communicate , not necessarily specialized devices.
You can use a hand mirror and the sun to communicate your position when you got lost in the woods or the knocks in the walls of a building that collapsed in an earthquake to communicate you are alive and what is your health like. I know these may seem like extreme situations but you never know what can happen to you , so it is better to be safe than sorry.
The free Morse code software can help you learn and use the Morse code pretty fast and there are enough applications that you can use on your computer and even on your cell phone. Most of these applications teach you the Morse code using various methods, give you tests and send you the results and a report of your evaluation and evolution, offer automatic encoding and decoding messages for those who want to have fun and communicate with their friends in their own way that only they can understand and some even offer some games that use the Morse code for fun.
Usually the Morse code uses the English language , but there are some software applications that also offer the Morse code variant in other languages, I mean those languages that do not use Latin characters, like Arabic, language, Russian, Chinese and so on.
Here are some examples of free Morse code software that you can try to use in order to see if you like tem or not: NuMorse Professional 1.620, CwGet Morse decoder 1.80, Free Morse Code 1.0.2, Free Morse Code and three more here. They all can help you learn and practice Morse code writing and decription on different levels, by using various tools. There is even one Morse Code Pro 1.03 for iPhone.
Learn the basics, step by step, starting with learning the Morse code first, I mean the replacement of the letters and numbers with dashes and dots and then, little by little, learn how to form words, how to pause between the words, so that you let your interlocutor know it's the end of one word or sentence, then try to encode a whole sentence by using the Morse code. Practice that with your friends and you will have a lot of fun. Then exchange sentences and try to decode a message. Only after you can do that in writing it is time for you to go to another level and hear the audio messages using the Morse code. Then just practice and enjoy, as you will never know when you need it.
