Vista’s ISATAP Adapter Bug and How to Troubleshoot Similar Issues

If you have enough time at your disposal, exploring Vista is a pretty interesting experience, especially since you may bump into some strange problems, as I did. Since after a little research I discovered that the issue I encountered is a system bug, I decided to let you know more about it, too.
As you can see in the screenshot below, in my Device Manager I have an entry next to a yellow exclamation mark. This is the problem I was talking about, so let's see if you have it or not, first of all...

The good part is that some computers don't have this problem, and discovering the truth takes only a minute.
- First of all, press the Start Orb, type "device" in the search bar, and then click the Device Manager.

- Expand the Network adapters section and see what you got there.

- If you have an entry like the one in the screenshot above, starting with "isatap", don't try to update driver or remove it, because after the next reboot this is going to be back.
For other similar problems, try to do the following things - update the existing driver, remove the device and then scan for hardware changes, and be sure to do some research on the Internet for your problem. If you noticed this ISATAP bug on your Vista computer too, please don't forget to drop us a comment!
Unfortunately, the only thing that can be done about it, at this time, is to ignore the error message, as there is no fix announced to be on the way, because Microsoft didn't bother to fix it since March, as you can see on the official support page...

Hi! I had a simmilar problem and i formatted my drive and reinstalled VISTA but i can not see my Wireless adapter in the Device Manager and if i view device by the type (hidden device) then i get to see the isatap with the curly brakcets and an address the way it is mentioned up there! If i right click on isatap and get to see the properties it says the device is working properly and gives me a location unknown. i have tried to reinstall the drivers for my wireless but i feel like it is dead for some reason have not had a wireless device to check it with but the amber light on the compaq F572US that would change to blue is amber regardless.

I had similar problem on my HP Pavilion laptop running VISTA. On my device manager's Network Adapters, there was an added adapter called isatap.mydomain-name.com
I resolved it by having to download an Ethernet NIC drive from HP website, re-installing the drive and rebooting the system.
What bothers me the most is (a) what caused it and (b) how do one prevent this from happening again. I am afraid I might have to face this problem again soon.
All in all, welcome to the VISTA world.

isatap can be removed but take out network drivers and software through device manager uninstall, then uninstall isatap from device manager while doing have no internet connection also power cycle modem/router
restart reinstall driver/software for nic/wireless recheck device manager for isatap if present "OSRI time" normally away you go :re attach network cable ip should reconfigure auto or password required. 'wireless' Connect to available network.

It's related to IPv6; open your connection(LAN, WLAN, etc) listing and disable IPv6 since you most likely don't use it.

I had the same problem, and to remove it I re installed the OS and only installed the important updates leaving out vista Sp2 as this is when the issue occurs.
Therefore to solve the issue for now do a clean install of your OS without Sp2 (vista 64 bit).
My system is a Dell D830 Latitude with Vista Business 64 bit OS, 4 GB ram, 4 GB turbo memory, intel 5300 agn wireless and 9 cell battery.
